That baffling anomaly was a disc of Serious Sam 2. We spent an hour looking around but TFE & TSE are nowhere to be found - only something strange that remotely resembles them. ![]() Took me weeks, but finally fast forward its roughly around my birthday and she takes me to a video game store. Uncle's playing The First Encounter - I was mesmerized, wasn't allowed to play but damn sure I watched in awe.Ĭame back home and immediately started nagging my mother to get the game, so I could "smash kleers". My story is a little unusual but still sweet. Siriusopolis Downtown - I always answered the Phone Booth whilst my siblings just kept firing at the enemies, essentially doing a "protect the civilian" mission.ĭuke's skeleton, Forsaken Compound, Magnor Prince Chan, ChiFang - We usually have one person distract Prince Chan whilst I kept shooting at himīoneyard, Kleer - I usually try sneaking past the T-Mech walkers at the end of the level (and often failing)Ĭoast 2 Cost, Ellenier - The flying enemies kept slamming themselves into cliff-facesįrostpost, Kronor - At the end of the level, one of the enemies (A Fatso Flier) kept flying in circles and it remained like that until I shot it. Sometimes, we'd even go hunting for secrets and Easter Eggs. We used to do one planet per game session, even treating the final level as if it were a planet (its playing time was 1 hour). I remember playing the whole game with my siblings. "That cannot be Mental you see, because Mental is the pyramid you fight at the end of SS2". To clarify their words, they shared their beliefs to cure our unenlightened minds, like a 1000-degree hot knife cutting through butter. When the first SS4 gameplay trailer in July 2020 was uploaded, people speculated in the Youtube comment section that the mysterious beast that punched Sam was Mental. ![]() Oh wait, I just remembered an actual interesting story related to SS2 Over the years, my feelings regarding SS2 has softened and I've come to enjoy it for what it is (being a superior game to SS3, that is).Īnyway, that's it. I was incredibly pissed off by that ending that I thought Serious Sam 3 was a good game when I first played it. How the fuck could you do that, Croteam? That ain't funny. When I beat it after a few tries, I thought that Mental must be an even greater fight than that just now.Īnd then the cutscene went on and the credits rolled and I'm left speechless. then the Mental Institution pyramid itself opened itself up into combat form and I was so incredibly excited to see that the level itself is the boss. I went through the beautiful Siriusopolis Downtown with its epic music and then Mental Institution with its even more amazing music and the biggest battles in the series so far, all thinking about what an epic grand finale Croteam had built up to. I believed in that promise, and I believed that Croteam is more than capable of delivering that promise. However, I was willing to forgive all that because by Kronor and Sirius, despite the silly arena sections, the game really hyped up the final battle. In fact, if it weren't for the intro cinematic showing gameplay from SSX, it would have no connection to the previous games and the game's plot can essentially be summed up as "space wizards summon hero from Earth to save them" like a shitty isekai anime (I heard that one of the developers even forgot the game was supposed to take place in the past). The game disregarded almost every lore point of the previous games. I also enjoy the banter between the "Sirians" especially with lines such as "when I was kid, they told me I was special". They're dumb, but they're so stupid it just hit me right in my immaturity that they round back to being hilarious. ![]() My favorite cutscenes in the game was the one in Chi-Fang where the old man moved very slowly and the one in Kronor where a Gnaar messed up Sam's big speech (which, by the way, is what I consider to be the funniest moment ever in a game). While I rolled my eyes at the poop and fart jokes, I am quite ashamed to admit that I laughed at all the times Sam scratched his balls in cutscenes. ![]() The complete shift in tone into the absurd is unexpected for sure, but it wasn't that. TSE's "To Be Concluded." got me pretty hyped for the finale of the series, which SS2 appeared to be. I was a newcomer to the series then, with no knowledge of what the series is about beyond what I've played nor did I have any contact with anyone who's played any SS game. I first played SS2 right after I was done with beating TFE and TSE. Not doing this for the code and not a particularly interesting story either, but it's something I want Croteam (particularly the ones responsible for SS2) to hear.
